Net Zero Community Hub points to a carbon-free future

Nicoll Russell Studios is leading efforts to deliver a Net Zero Community Hub on behalf of Heriot-Watt University.
Working with Narro Associates and Harley Haddow the practice will point the way to a carbon-free future by showcasing the latest research and providing a platform for 'global thought leaders' to talk about sustainability.
A distinctive triangular plan will set the building apart, with an emphasis on domestic-scale and natural materials such as Heriot-Watt developed K-Briq (a super-insulated brick alternative made from 90% recycled materials) and timber.
Located on a brownfield site adjacent to the campus the one-off design sits behind an L-plan 'protecting enclosure' to anchor the space within the campus. Outlining their approach the architects wrote: "The concept envisages a robust ‘L’ shaped protecting enclosure. A ‘Harbour’ within which nestles a series of simple fluid spaces. The powerful geometric form of the wall defines and creates a sense of place, a place to gather and exchange."
Emphasising the K-Briq clad walls through a series of colourful vertical stripes the building points towards its beating heart, an elevated photovoltaics-clad plant tower that frees up a south-facing enclosure as a semi-covered external space.
A second L-plan wall frames an outdoor demonstration yard with the site perimeter otherwise defined through planting.
An outdoor demonstration yard will facilitate workshops and activities, acting as an extension of the interior
