Blackness student cluster expands with an industrial build
August 22 2023
Glenmore Student Property and CAG Architects have lodged plans for purpose-built student accommodation at 10 Douglas Street in Dundee's Blackness Conservation Area.
Billed as the third phase to parallel projects at 63 and 56 Brown Street the latest student build will replace an existing workshop with industrial-styled accommodation.
Setting out this approach CAG wrote: "Aluzinc cladding and rooftop flashings give a bright energy to the form and will dull as they weather. Angular forms recall industry and mechanisation. At ground level, the steel grilles will also give a visceral tactile quality. The galvanized base steel grounds the whole scheme.
"The light (creamy) brick is used extensively across the proposal and will be the main element that binds all the components together. The colour spectrum has to be sympathetic to both the existing and proposed environs.
"Profiled timber in a sympathetic colour brings tremendous depth and warmth to the palette. In addition, this use of an 'old school' material is a touchstone to a more traditional construction where many ancillary elements were painted wood and the use here reflects that contrast and enhances detail."
The sawtooth roofed block will front the shared surface public realm, delineated by a row of trees.
