Construction campus rounds off Glenrothes timber exemplar
August 3 2023
Do Architecture has followed up its plans for a Glenrothes crematorium with complementary proposals for a construction campus comprising a timber frame factory, construction skills academy and manufacturing headquarters.
Situated in the Southfield district of the town the industrial complex for First Endeavour will produce affordable homes at volume for Fife with on-site training. Sitting alongside a planned crematorium to the north, the campus shares waste and renewable energy to meet Net Zero aspirations.
In a press statement to accompany the planning application Do Architecture wrote: "The buildings construction palette utilises a timber structure over large scales in an expressive form. The pair of buildings aim to express their function and a sawtooth roof introduces a traditional factory motif while allowing north light to enter workspaces while south-facing slopes present areas for renewable solar energy collection via an array of photovoltaic panels which contribute to the site's renewable energy and carbon reduction strategy. This maximisation of solar input via an array of solar photovoltaic panels is intended to help power the factory, adjacent car charging and crematorium.
"Externally, the buildings are proposed to be clad in a combination of glass curtain walling and sinusoidal cladding. Equally important is visibility into and through the industrial buildings to make the internal activities of manufacture and learning readable to the outside and equally provide a view to the outside for workers and students."
Both the construction campus and crematorium share a common construction methodology for economies of scale amidst a verdant woodland setting.
