Work to begin on major Midlothian development

Hundreds of homes are to be built within Edinburgh's city bypass as part of a new community linked to the city by a bus park and ride.

Cala will break ground on greenfield land at Newton and Wellington Farms, located between Old Craighall and Millerhill, within the next few weeks for infrastructure works to enable 620 homes to be built under a JTP masterplan.

A spine road will link Newton Farm to the bypass with associated footpaths, lighting, drainage and pedestrian crossings to provide a safe environment.

Derek Lawson, strategic land director with Cala Homes (East), said: “As well as providing a timely boost to housing supply, this development will have a significant long-term positive impact on the local transportation network in this part of Midlothian.”

Enablement works require the closure of Old Craighall Road for 12 weeks from 6 September while roadworks are carried out.

You wouldn't think from that layout that there was a brand new railway station just off the map, would you.

Cala are better than their rivals generally but this is still the sort of dross that needs to be left in the past.

One anticipates this will be the same as all the other identical Box A/Box B housing pushed up all over the country where the only way to identify a house is by the colour of car in the driveway. In a hundred years time will there be any sentiment for these boxes?
