Dundee plants seeds for a green tourism revolution
July 17 2023
The seeds of a futuristic vision of paradise at a former Dundee gasworks are to be sown this autumn with the submission of a highly anticipated proposal of application notice.
The University of Dundee is leading the Eden Project charge with a consultation process running through the summer in the meantime, to whet appetites for landscaping works of herculean scale.
A brownfield site at East Dock Street has been chosen to host the green tourism vision, drawing nature into the heart of the city and encouraging the reappraisal of our relationship with the environment.
Centrepiece of the vision will be a converted gas holder, maintaining continuity with the site's industrial past while the land around it undergoes a dramatic change. Delivered in partnership with Dundee City Council and Northwood Charitable Trust the project will be accessed by a new pedestrian bridge.
Tall brick walls enclosing the site are to be retained and repurposed as a walled garden. Design work is led by Eden Project International, with support from local practice Nicoll Russell Studios and Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios in Bath & London.
The first in-person event is scheduled for 26 July at Arthurstone Library, where the visitor experience, architecture and regeneration potential will be outlined in greater detail.
