Union Street active travel route shifts gear

Aberdeen City Council has shown off updated designs for a segregated cycle lane on the north side of Union Street, as part of its city centre masterplan.

Running the entire length of the thoroughfare the active travel route serves as the first phase of a broader package of public realm improvements for the area between Market Street and Bridge Street.

Linking up projects such as Aberdeen Markets the route will include will swerve to accommodate access to upgraded bus stops and includes tree planting and cohesive street furniture to give the road a coherent identity.

To ensure pedestrians are not inconvenienced by cyclists extra wide crossings are provided at bus shelters with a commensurate narrowing of the cycle lane to slow riders. Rumble strips will also be included to provide acoustic cues with kerb and pavement detailing providing further tactile cues.

Work to progress the RIBA Stage 4 technical design will now proceed.

Spent 30 years forcing families out to the shire by allowing mostly flats to be built, not family homes, now doing their best to restrict car access to the city whilst simultaneously wondering why nobody’s coming into the city. A mystery…..

Oh dear they seem to have caught wobbly cycle lane syndrome from the Leith Walk Project! Go look at European cities to see how cycle lanes should be done and integrate properly with vehicle and pedestrian space or like in Edinburgh they won't get used properly and safely.
