Cycle-friendly Castlemilk homes embrace the outdoors

Craigdale Housing Association has performed an official opening ceremony for 36 new apartments in Castlemilk, Glasgow.

Built by AS Homes to designs by George Buchanan Architects the £5.5m development takes the place of a former church at Glenacre Terrace, providing a mix of one and two-bedroom flats with wheelchair-accessible homes.

The cycle-friendly scheme makes the most of existing biking routes by providing bicycle storage and ensuring easy access for residents on two wheels.

Des Fee, chair of the board of Craigdale Housing Association, said: “At Craigdale we are thrilled to have our first new build homes at affordable rents available after more than a decade of not developing new homes."

The new homes were supported by a £3.4m subsidy from Glasgow City Council’s Affordable Housing Supply Programme. Minister for housing, Paul McLennan, added: "These homes will contribute to our ambitious target of delivering 110,000 affordable homes by 2032, of which at least 70% will be available for social rent.”

Set within landscaped grounds the scheme includes a play area, sculpture and outdoor seating.

Cycle-friendly... Its got a few bike sheds (that offer no protection from the elements) and links to a shared pavement cycle path which has no consistent flow...

I doubt the Dutch or Danes will be flocking for inspiration...

They look ok, but fundamentally they are just high density flats with no places to sit outside such as a balcony.
