Education hub to bring Milton community together

Glasgow City Council's education services department has lodged plans for a community hub and nursery in Milton, Glasgow.

Situated on the site of the former Glasgow School for the Deaf at Shapinsay Street, demolished in the 1990s, the project hub will cater for an expansion of early years provision while also introducing shared community spaces such as allotments and a playground.

Tenanted by North United Communities, a group dedicated to providing social and well-being initiatives, the building will replace outdated facilities at Ruchill Community Centre.

In a statement, the local authority wrote: "At the heart of the project, Glasgow City Council wish to create an effective educational environment which takes a holistic approach to the design process by combining social, economic and environmental goals resulting in a sustainable architecture, culture and landscape. The new hub requires to be responsive to current and future educational and community needs without significant impact on the environment.

"The project vision is to deliver an exemplar facility for the community of Milton. The building should aspire to become the new heart of the community. The spaces within should provide a stimulating and supportive environment which caters for the needs of both groups and individuals."

With space for 95 infants, the nursery will include four playrooms, a dining area and offices.

A community growing space will be provided in the hub grounds

We need better quality public buildings than this. Resembles a mass builders poor quality bungalow.

I like it. Well proportioned and the material pallet breaks up façade nicely. Good to see some proper investment in this area of the city. Hopefully stimulates further growth.

#2 The only thing this is going to stimulate is comments from Great Uncle Beet

Hopefully this building is used to educate our children in how to design.

As far as I can see this is still in progress, an application to 'discharge conditions' was made in April and is awaiting a decision.

In this case checks for mine gas have been carried out and brick samples submitted but require the agreement of planners before work can begin on site.

The wheels of planning turn slowly.
