Crenellated terrace leads Dalmeny House refurbishment
June 5 2023
The A-listed Dalmeny House, a Tudor Gothic Revival pile on the shores of the Firth of Forth, is to undergo a series of changes linked to measures to diversify its use for visitor accommodation while remaining a family home.
Conservation specialists Simpson & Brown have been brought on board by Rosebery Estates to replace ad-hoc service appendages to the rear with a new terrace, part of moves to upgrade catering and entertainment facilities.
Alterations and additions utilise salvaged stone where possible, with Hazledene substituted for Craigleath sandstone for new rampart detailing.
In a heritage statement, the architects wrote: "A low intervention strategy has been adopted. Alterations to the exterior of the building are largely restricted to the rear elevation, and no changes to the principal elevations or the Coade Stone detailing are proposed. Interior changes are concentrated in areas where the fabric is of relatively low significance...
"No changes are proposed to the state rooms at ground floor level on the east side of the building, which comprise the most significant interiors in the house including the formal dining room, Gothic corridor, and Napoleon room."
A general refurbishment will accompany these changes, including rewiring, plumbing and improved lift access.
