A second wave of housing to extend Glasgow's Athlete's Village
April 28 2023
A second phase of housing at the Commonwealth Games Athlete's Village in Dalmarnock is to get underway following an agreement between landowners Glasgow City Council and Scottish Power, which operates two electrical substations on the land.
The deal means work to deliver 125 terraced brownfield homes can begin later this year, supplementing the 700 flats and houses completed back in 2014.
Phase two designs by Stewart Stevenson Architects follow the earlier template with terraced homes lining the established streetscape. This will necessitate re-grading to level steep banked edges from when the site was used as a tented village.
Councillor Ruari Kelly commented: “The Athletes’ Village was a landmark development for Dalmarnock and the East End of Glasgow, bringing high-quality for sale and social rent to the area and was a catalyst for the wider and ongoing regeneration of this part of the city. The approval of the development agreement would allow the construction of the second phase of the development to begin, with all the economic and social benefits this will bring to Glasgow.”
Each timber kit property will be manufactured off-site and include roof-integrated solar panels. Landscpaed linear parkland skirts the western boundary of the village.

We get more Noddy houses minus the RMJM swags and tails of the first phase.
This area has to be one of the great lost opportunities of inner city Glasgow. I'm sorry to say that a new Lidl sitting in an island of car parking next to the petrol station just doesn't quite cut it.
Variety of new house types going into the area bringing in a much needed extra bodies into the area with the welcome addition of a much more varied and youthful local population.
Is it perfect -- not even close but it is progress of a sort even it does not meet the standards of the childless architectural ultras who want everyone to live their lives and not their own.
Better to re-populate the ghost streets of north and east Glasgow than more suburban sprawl out along the motorways.
Waiting for perfection is not the way forward.
