RIAS induct six new honorary fellows
April 26 2023
The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland has inducted six new honorary fellows drawn from across cultural, academic, business and political life.
Recognised for their work to promote architecture and the built environment the 2023 cohort includes Sue Evans, chair of the Scottish Civic Trust and an executive committee member of Scotland's Landscape Alliance, for harnessing placemaking to improve health, well-being and diversity.
Scientist and academic Sir Geoff Palmer meanwhile was chosen for his work highlighting the legacy of colonialism in the built environment while artist Dr Will MacLean is elevated for his contributions to public land sculpture. Also in the mix is Dame Seona Reid, vice chair of Wasps Artist Studios among other commitments, a role which combines heritage and arts funding.
RIAS president Chris Stewart said: “All of this year’s recipients are making energetic, inspirational and at times challenging contributions to architecture in Scotland. Through their work, they demonstrate that architecture has a vital role to play in so many aspects of our lives – whether our health and education, our appreciation of our landscape and culture, or our understanding of how our built heritage at times reflects uncomfortable truths and future challenges.”
In a rare move, the RIAS has also awarded a joint honorary fellowship to Steve and Gail Evans, founders of Inscape Joinery, for fuelling a wave of architecturally significant small and medium-sized projects on awkward sites.

2. James, you may just have a point
3. Dont shoot the messenger
The RIAS just comes across with these ludicrous announcements as being a posh club, of posh people by posh people for posh people.
Inscape Joinery are undoubtedly a First Class building team, but what message does that send to every other quality contractor, builder etc. who don't work for the chosen posh people?
If the RIAS were any other business organisation, any competent PR consultant would put the brakes on this sort of thing as being wholly outdated.
There's lots happening out there, and this is not it.
