Dundee Museum of Transport is on the move

Dundee Museum of Transport is set for a new home after the city council rubber-stamped plans to convert the B-listed Maryfield Tram Depot.
Andrew Black Design is spearheading plans to refashion the 120m long Forfar Road building, currently on the Buildings at Risk Register, to house a museum and exhibition space.
Dating from 1901 the historic building would be conserved and restored for its new use, with a new steel structure and panelled roof replacing a fire-damaged rear section, with high-level translucent polycarbonate panels drawing light inside. The main entrance meanwhile will be repositioned to the centre of the building within an internal courtyard that opens onto a new external display area.
Andrew Black, director at Andrew Black Design said: “We are delighted to be working with the Dundee Museum of Transport to breathe new life into a dilapidated piece of the city’s transport heritage, transforming an iconic building into a world-class transport museum that will be fit for purpose for generations to come. We now look forward to proceeding to detailed design and work starting on site in the near future.”
The future-proofed museum includes the scope to introduce a mezzanine level at a later date, enabling the interior volume to be customised to suit evolving needs.
