Leith active travel push to prioritise health & wellbeing

The City of Edinburgh Council has announced that work will begin on 10 April to deliver a package of active travel and public realm improvements in Leith.

Leith Connections will improve walking and cycling opportunities in the area as well as introduce more welcoming places to linger from Constitution Street and Leith Links to the Shore.

When work finishes in June residents will see enhanced pedestrian crossings, new planting and seating as well as artwork together with a general declutter of the streetscape. New traffic layouts include the closure of Sandport Place Bridge to all vehicles and the introduction of bus gates while ensuring existing homes and businesses are still accessible by car.

Councillor Scott Arthur, transport and environment convener, said: "Leith Connections is a really exciting opportunity to create safer, more welcoming spaces to walk, wheel and cycle in Leith, as well as for spending time with friends or visiting local businesses. These changes have drawn on feedback from the community, as well as the Council’s own monitoring. They will also provide better connections to popular walking and cycling routes nearby, like the north Edinburgh path network and the Water of Leith walkway and soon, protected cycle lanes on Leith Walk, delivered as part of the Trams to Newhaven project."

Funded by the Scottish Government and administered by Sustrans the impact on traffic volumes and air quality will be closely monitored.

Ah, the joy of cycling on wet cobble stones.
