Developer homes in on Union Street in Aberdeen city living drive
March 9 2023
A heritage granite building in Aberdeen's Union Street conservation area is to be radically augmented by 21 apartments over seven storeys on a car park to the rear.
Amicable House currently serves as office space in an area where zero parking is favoured, encouraging the re-use of otherwise redundant space.
Into this picture step GML Architects, who state that despite its scale the proposal will only be visible from Union Row, with elevations clad in vertical bands of profiled and flat terracotta charcoal and white tiles. Living spaces will include metal balustrading with clear glazing behind and cast glass will denote a revamped entrance to Union Street as well as the rooftop.
In a design statement, the architects wrote:"The counterpoint of smooth and textured materials allied to the subtle colour and texture variations that the banding produces results in a building which is both complimentary to the buildings within the conservation area and responds positively to the requirements for a big building to have both an interesting silhouette and vertical appearance in order to minimise their bulk."
The car-free project will include 22 cycle spaces.
