Glasgow’s Avenues programme reaches Holland Street

Public realm improvements to Glasgow’s Holland Street are to get underway next month as part of the £115m Avenues programme.

A bank of trees is planned for the western side together with wider footpaths surfaced in Caithness stone with granite kerbs. A two-way segregated cycle path on Pitt Street between Sauchiehall Street and Waterloo Street is also proposed as well as soft landscaping and drainage.

When complete 4,000sq/m of additional public realm will have been created, including 1,035 sq m of new walkways, 550 metres of enhanced road network, 535 metres of new cycle track, 327 sq m of new green infrastructure, and 11 upgraded junctions.

UK government minister for Scotland, Malcolm Offord, said: "This will provide businesses and residents with eco-friendly active travel and transport routes, while soft landscaping and rain gardens will improve drainage and help the city to adapt to climate change."

It might be helpful is the council fixed the footpaths already installed with Caithness stone. Argyle street and Buchanan st is a compo trip hazard waiting to happen

It's a pity Glasgow City Council can't put any effort into keeping the streets clean. Glasgow is in a disgusting state with litter everywhere. Instead they put their efforts into vanity projects like this instead of doing real work. Look at Sauchiehall Street where this 'improvement has already happened. Its already filthy and covered in litter and chewing gum!

It's not the council dropping litter and spitting chewing gum everywhere. People usually get the city environment they create

Equally the state of the shops on Sauchiehall St is generally pretty poor as well - its a vicious cycle.

Of course, if folk stopped being minks and put their rubbish in a bin, then that would help - but that would involve effort, wouldn't it?

The Sauchiehall St “avenue” is already a disaster with a huge number of stone slabs missing filled in with tar or cracked and loose. Total waste of money and a really shoddy job done.
