£4m Whitburn Partnership Centre takes a bow

Smith Scott Mullan Associates have shown off the newly completed Whitburn Partnership Centre, a £4m community hub led by West Lothian Council.

The work has delivered a contemporary new community hub alongside a revitalised Whitburn Burgh Hall, delivering a library, museum and two large community function suites for the town.

Linked by all new public realm suitable for hosting public events the civic centre is finished in facing brick with glazing and bronze solar fins with integrated signage. Almost entirely naturally ventilated the highly insulated building incorporates roof-mounted solar panels.

In a statement, the architects wrote: "Internally, key spaces are flooded with natural daylight, with oak batten feature ceilings and wall linings that create a welcoming and warm space which also deals with acoustics. The most dramatic space is the double-height community hall with a large roof light and feature ceiling at the heart of the centre."

The project team includes Maxi Construction (following the collapse of CBC), structural engineers Bayne Stevenson Associates, services engineers EDP Consulting Engineers, quantity surveyors Brownriggs and principal designer F3 building surveyors.

Lovely building - congratulations to all involved. It would be great to see more civic projects of this quality outwith the major cities and towns.
