3-in-1 Blackscroft build to push Dundee city centre boundaries

Dundee city centre is set for expansion with the unveiling of a three-pronged development comprising a restaurant/hotel; church conversion and new build apartments.

Blackscroft Property with Wilson/Paul Architects are leading the £5m initiative, which centres on the B-listed former St Roques Library, given a new gold aluminium top hat housing nine ensuite rooms.

Works will retain existing stonework with replacement windows, as part of moves to turn the main building into a gastropub. This will be complemented by the conversion of St Roques Church to provide seven apartments.

Option appraisals for the third and final element of the scheme, a new build courtyard apartment block on Foundry Lane of 24 flats, including on-site parking and allotments.

The Reading Rooms was a Dundee and national institution. Closed due to noise complaints from a new hotel built to support the city's burgeoning V&A inspired cultural scene. The irony of the situation is that the Reading Rooms was more a 'living room in the city' than the V&A could ever be. It has essentially been usurped by an oversized, cavernous and poorly conceived gift shop. But hey, the tourist dollar is what our cities need, right?

Seeing the renouned Reading Rooms reduced to sitting there ridiculed with a silly hat on makes me very sad. More wet-the-bed projects in Dundee that fail to capitalise on real problems supported by the stumbling drunk council.

#2 you make a valid point - aside from questions on high level strategic thinking and DCC accountability, this proposal just looks really daft. The old place deserves much better.
