Partick-Govan swing bridge in touching distance as piling completes

Work by Jacobs to erect a feature cable-stayed swing bridge connecting Govan to Partick is taking shape with the completion of piling works.

Images show the completion of piling on the south bank while working to extend Pointhouse Quay to accommodate the northern landing in tandem.

When completed the footbridge will achieve an opening span of 64m from a single pivot point, with loads transferred to a splayed pylon. Sweeping away from the Riverside Museum to minimise visual intrusion, it references the profile of a crane jib rising from a triangular support frame.

The bridge will be complemented by public realm improvements on both banks of the river, conforming to the current arrangement around the Transport Museum comprising stone seating cubes, granite slabs and steps at the north landing.

David Buchanan, project manager at main contractor Farrans Construction, commented: “Marine piling is a challenging activity that can be heavily impacted by adverse weather, tidal conditions and unforeseen obstructions in the river. Our next step is to complete the southern cofferdam, dewater and start concrete works on the southern pier on which the bridge will pivot."

Completion of the crossing is anticipated by Spring 2024.

Something odd about that aerial view...the Show Folks yard (bottom left corner) seems to have changed into an immaculate lawn.
