Industrial-style school to serve as Blindwells centrepiece
December 7 2022
Planning consent has been granted for a new primary school in Blindwells, East Lothian, to cater for the burgeoning planned settlement.
A 4.2-hectare former open-cast coal mine is in the process of being transformed into a new community which will now be served by a primary school and early years facility with a capacity for 520 children.
With a distinctive sawtooth roof profile, the school will reflect the area's industrial heritage, adopting a palette of brick and rain screen timber effect cladding.
Including provision for outdoor learning and growing as well as an additional needs support garden the school will offer shared community facilities including sports pitches, a running track and a basketball court.
Designed by jmarchitects to Passivhaus principles the school is to be delivered by Balfour Beatty on behalf of East Lothian Council with its development partner, Hub South East.
Completion is expected in time for the 2024/25 academic year.
