Tram extensions spark renewed interest in Edinburgh's waterfront

Eight shovel-ready development sites spread across Western and Granton Harbour, Leith, are being marketed for sale to deliver hundreds of homes.

The brownfield sites extend to 10.21 acres across five separate development plots at Western Harbour, with the potential to deliver around 600 homes as part of a broader 3,000-home masterplan for the waterfront site.

Spurred by the arrival of the Newhaven tram extension next Spring the harbour area sits adjacent to the proposed Forth Ports masterplan.

A further three development plots are up for sale at nearby Granton Harbour, totalling 3.94 acres of land suitable for residential and mixed-use development neighbouring Edinburgh Marina.

Access to the area could be opened up by a future tram extension in a loop along the waterfront, connecting 60 acres of former industrial land to the city centre.

The sales are being managed by Scarlett Land and Development and Reith Lambert.

One would hope that it would become something akin to Oslo’s Aker Brygge or Bjørkvika districts, but I fear it’ll turn out more like Glasgow Harbour.
