Edinburgh paves the way for a pedestrian-priority New Town
November 4 2022
City of Edinburgh Council has finalised designs for the transformation of George Street to serve as the lynchpin of a revitalised New Town.
Extensive consultations have seen Atkins and LDA rationalise the four-lane carriageway to establish a more pedestrian-friendly public realm. Expected to break ground in 2024 the transformation will rip up parking bays to introduce generous 4m wide pavements, retaining a central cycle highway flanked by newly introduced planters and low hedges.
Employing natural stone in the landscaping work will augment accessibility improvements to the wider New Town, centred on curtailing access to non-essential vehicles. This will be facilitated by the redesign of junctions to prioritise those on foot and improve the setting of prominent statues.
Councillor Scott Arthur, transport and environment convener said: "We will transform George Street from a place which is dominated by cars to one which is dominated by people.
"Once complete, GNT will deliver a world-class city centre worthy of a European capital, highlighting Edinburgh’s stunning architecture and creating a safe space for people to spend time in."
Funded by Sustrans the improvement works will now be put before the city's transport and environment committee for approval.
