Plans finalised for Granton Gasholder Park
November 1 2022
Finalised plans have been drawn up for the erection of a gasholder park at Granton Waterfront to cement the area's transition to a post-industrial economy.
The B-listed structure dominates the Forthquarter area of the waterfront with steelwork circling an area 72m wide and standing 43m tall, lending itself to the formation of an events space.
The centrepiece of what is being promoted as Europe's largest coastal park the giant gasholder will stand as the first phase of work, in which around 770 homes will be delivered with Cruden Homes between 2024 and 2028, establishing pedestrian and cycle routes between the waterfront and Upper Granton in the process.
Turning the industrial area into a multifunctional events space the surrounding environment will be landscaped to frame the structure which will host six areas dedicated to play, interpretation, art and relaxation.
Access will be provided by a new walkway connecting to a peripheral ring walk around the foundations.
