National Treatment Centre rollout to tackle spiraling NHS wait times
October 12 2022
NHS Ayrshire and Arran have announced plans for a new National Treatment Centre at the former Carrick Glen Hospital, Ayr, to tackle record waiting times for routine care.
Major alterations and extensions are to be carried out by Norr as part of this transformation, to provide the necessary theatres, support spaces and bedrooms.
A two-storey 'barn' extension will provide 3,900sq/m of additional floor space, one of nine such planned treatment centres, establishing a clear public entrance from Dalmellington Road in the process. This will sit alongside the 'farmhouse' existing hospital, reserved for non-clinical spaces.
In a massing statement, Norr wrote: "The existing building has limited storey height (circa 2.7m) which is substantially below the height required for heavily serviced theatres/ peri-operative accommodation. The new theatres and Peri-Operative suite are therefore to be located in the new build extension. This allows plant spaces to be located directly above.
"... the upper plant floor is to be finished is a separate texture to create a visual datum at the lower floor and reduce the visual impact. This is aided by a step back to the courtyard side to further reduce this impact and visually separate the base from the more abstract top."
The extension is to be clad in large format aluminium panels with hidden fixings with a contrasting colour and texture between the lower and upper floors.
