Construction work on the St Andrews Community Hospital and Health Centre, designed by Glasgow based architect Ryder Architecture, has reached the half way point.

Procured under a £27 million public private partnership (PPP) scheme for NHS Fife with the Morrison Consortium, the new 10,850 sq m (115,000 sq ft) community hospital will include three GP practices, dentistry, physiotherapy, dialysis, a 40 bed inpatient unit, diagnostic and treatment centre, specialist elderly rehabilitation care and a day surgery unit. 

John Bell, Ryder architect leading the design team said: “This project has presented a unique opportunity and challenge to develop a new community hospital for St Andrews.

“The design is responsive to the human scale and characteristics of the built environment of St Andrews and provides an uplifting environment for the delivery of community healthcare facilities. It integrates GP clinics, outpatient services, and inpatient care.

 “A series of pavilions linked by a central public hub space reduces the scale of the building and minimises the travel distance between departments. This design also simplifies way finding and creates an effective and reassuring heart to the hospital."

Work on the new hospital - which will replace St Andrews Memorial Hospital and St Andrews Health Centre – is due to complete by June 2009.
