Cycle-friendly Govanhill homes complete

George Buchanan Architects have completed a new build residential development on Glasgow's south side, on behalf of AS Homes for Southside Housing Association.

The Allison Street build in Govanhill comprises 49 apartments for social rent and mid-market rent, as well as one ground-floor commercial unit behind a feature colonnade to bring new vitality to the street.

Combining generous cycle storage and low parking availability the homes actively promote sustainable transport options, such as the nearby South City Way.

This approach frees up the communal backcourt for a 100sq/m community garden.

In a statement the architect wrote: "Located within a dense urban environment, the development provides much needed amenity space to residents with a large communal garden, encouraging active play and social interaction.

"The material choices of the development have been carefully considered to reflect the neighbouring tenement properties. Brick finishes have been selected that echo both the red and buff sandstone of the period tenements that surround the site. Contemporary detailing including cills and varied brickwork techniques assist in adding variety to the streetscape."

The homes were completed in May.  Photography by Iain McLean.

Look at the imagination that's gone into the design.

I think this is an excellent scheme.
Mixed use, keeps the density of the surroundings, sympathetic wrt heights and colour scheme, expands existing properties' shared gardens. Glasgow needs much more of this to fill the craters left by decades of demented urban policy.

Agree with comment above, an excellent scheme.

There's a development in Partickhill where homes have gone for £650,000 and it's not so different from this. Good scheme.

I notice none of the trees or street bike parking on the street that were in the original drawings have materialised .

Good scheme, but why so austere?

It could use some greenery to soften it but you could say that about Govanhill in general.

Technically... and historically, this is Strathbungo not Govanhill, but don't tell that to the people in the conservation area.

Strathbungo is a made up place to increase property values by estate agents

It's certainly positive to see a proper tenement block being delivered. Materials look decent too.

It's really lacking pizazz though. Very austere. I would love to see some decorative ironwork or design flourishes in the brickwork.

The biggest improvement would be some street trees though. This street is screaming out for them.
