Abandoned mill to anchor a 'statement' home within the Fife landscape

An unlisted Fife mill near St Andrews is the subject of a 'statement' home which would see the ruins brought back into use as the anchor of a proposed circular extension.

Pitmilly Mill at Falside Farm, Boarhills, is being led by AB Roger & Young, who propose to erect additional accommodation raised upon engineered stilts.

Facing onto a patio and driveway this would serve as an entrance area sweeping occupants down to the old mill below. Faced in natural timber lining under a living sedum green roof the proposed extension opts for an organic form to stand apart from the traditional mill.

In a statement, the architect wrote: "The proposed extension is organic in shape featuring a circular module along with a sweeping curved link to join the proposed to the existing mill. It is felt that this shape will make the home a much more unique and interesting development which will lend itself well to the traditional part of the mill conversion."

Local reclaimed stone will be used for the restoration element of the plans, which include a natural slate roof.

The extension will mediate between an access road and a burn at lower level

Maybe with all that extra accommodation they could find somewhere to store a lawnmower!
