Merchiston garden room replacement embraces modern living
June 8 2022
DS Architecture has obtained planning consent for the erection of a replacement single-storey extension to the rear of a house at Polwarth Terrace, Merchiston, Edinburgh.
The local fast track decision permits demolition of an existing garden room and internal reorganisation to remove an interior timber stair to permit construction of an open plan kitchen/diner and snug.
In a statement, the architect said: "The bold but sensitive design seeks to replace an existing garden room extension to engage more coherently with the garden and opens up the internal space at lower ground level to offer the house a kitchen, dining and secondary living space more suiting a family home of this size.
"The external walls, arranged as simple planes to form the internal space, will be finished using stone to match the existing house while the zinc-clad roof structure is engineered to appear floating over clerestory glazing to add a lightness to its appearance while also inviting as much natural light into the space inside."
Large format glazed sliding doors will open to the garden with a boot room serving as a threshold between indoors and outdoors.
