289 student homes planned for Murrayfield
June 1 2022
Jmarchitects have applied to build 289 student bedrooms on the site of a disused office block at 36-44 Westfield Road, Edinburgh, following consultations.
Acting on behalf of Host Student Housing Management and McKay the design team aim to increase density on a brownfield site while demurring to a 'garden frontage'.
Targetting a BREEAM Excellent rating the build will deliver a mix of studio and cluster apartments close to Murrayfield Stadium, meeting the ground with a colonade to emphasise communal areas and adjacent public realm.
In a design statement the architects wrote: "Overhangs in combination with large glass panels form a connection between the indoor amenity areas and the external intimate spaces between building and new landscape.
"Off-white brick tones have been selected to softly reflect light and brighten up the surroundings."
Openable windows are set behind perforated metal screens with living room and stairs expressed on the facade as 'three-window extrusions', a modern take on the traditional bay window.
HarrisonStevens are serving as landscape architects on the project, conceiving a 'structural pagoda' to formalise the street frontage and frame views of the planting.

New scheme is a bland, corporate, repetitive, over-dense filler...nothing more.
Garden frontage on the western approach?...really?
