The Highlanders' Museum

The Highlanders' Museum
2013
The Highlanders’ Museum was re-opened in March 2013 by HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The museum is one of the most highly regarded regimental museums in the United Kingdom. It is situated within Fort George, one of the finest and best preserved historic military sites in Europe. The museum covers the entire Regimental history of The Highlanders (now 4th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland) and its antecedent regiments.

Designed by StudioSP, with McGregor Bowes as conservation architect, the new museum retains the intimacy and sense of discovery that was an inherent part of the previous museum experience by creating displays that whilst based on modular principles, vary in configuration from room to room. Finishes are also varied throughout the displays, albeit chosen from a carefully selected overall palette including bronze, oak and douglas fir.

Another key aspect of the design scheme is the restoration and reveal of the building’s interior architecture, much of which remained long hidden behind displays and intrusive building services. The new displays bring showcases away from the walls and windows allowing visitors to gain a greater appreciation of the room proportions and elegant details.
