Seascape

Seascape
2010
Seascape, a spectacular barrel-roofed detached house in Kingsteps for architect clients Duncan and Fiona Porteous is a one off four/five-bedroom house within the Highland town of Nairn.

A split-level property designed to take full advantage of the spectacular, uninterrupted views it enjoys across the Moray Firth towards the Black Isle the home employs open plan living space, from an open plan kitchen, to double-height spaces.

The flexible space is used as a dining-room and lounge. Sliding patio doors allow instant and easy access to the garden, something the couple was keen to have as they have a four-year-old son, Callum.

A bespoke steel and beech staircase leads to the upper floor, which has a huge galleried area housing another impressive lounge.

This has a feature wood-burning stove and patio doors leading to a decked balcony from which there are spectacular views towards the Moray Firth.

Beige-coloured marble is used on the lower floor with recycled beech upstairs.

Such recycling is a key consideration of the development with material from the original house reused where possible, including brickwork which was broken up and used as hardcore. Windows and flooring were given away to other people doing their own building project.
