Killin Drive
Shettleston Housing Association commissioned Collective Architecture to design new housing on a vacant site next to John Wheatley College in Shettleston. This new build project consists of 2 storey houses, 3 storey townhouses and 1 wheelchair accessible bungalow. The site utilise the existing access to the College from Killin Street and faces South onto the playing field of Eastbank Academy.
A key feature of the building is the 2 storey ‘rouge’ zinc roof formed around projecting bay windows. The whole project is tied together by a ‘wrapping envelope wall’ consisting of reclaimed brick seconds. The aim of the projecting bays is to architecturally identify the importance of the South facing aspect of the site and provide unique frontage to the park.
An important aspect of the brief was to use sustainable energy systems to provide both ecological benefits and a means to alleviate fuel poverty. Solar water collectors and ground source heat pumps are proposed for each house to promote the sustainable nature of the project. The wall insulation is manufactured by local supplier ‘Superglass’ who aim to use 80 percent recycled material in their products.
The townhouses themselves are spacious and efficiently planned with French balcony doors to living spaces and low-level window sills to bedrooms. The living spaces are located on the second floor to further enhance the aspect and views that stretch beyond the garden boundary.
