Inside Outside Pavilion

Inside Outside Pavilion
2008
The stated aim of the brief was to design a shelter for smokers who work in the Oxford House office block. British American Tobacco’s main proviso was that it had to be sited prominently to provide a point of visual interest and allow those employees who smoke, a measure of dignity. Finally the new structure should avoid “looking like a bus shelter”.

The idea of a space that’s sits between being inside and outside formed the initial concept. The resultant design uses the warm/cool contrast of timber and steel to create a balance of open-ness and enclosure. Slate paving is used for the floor while simple wooden blocks serve as bench seating. The solid wall with door opening faces the office building allowing a measure of privacy without limiting access.
