Ageing in Place Coastal Home Renovation
We were invited to redesign a family home in the East Neuk of Fife. The aim was to extend and upgrade the house to suit the family but also future proof the home with strategies for ageing in place and ‘Housing for Varying Needs.’ We were asked to create a more functional, social layout and enhance the view at their coastal location. The design aimed to retain as much of the existing character to the front of the property to be in keeping with the rest of the street, as well as introduce upgrades to the rear to make the most of the sea views and south facing passive solar gain.
The transformation took a modest 19060s house into a contemporary two-story, three-bedroom, a spacious open-plan kitchen and living space, complete with a first floor balcony that maximises the views. Unique elements of the house include, an inbuilt double-sided fire place, a lift for effortless accessibility throughout their life, a exterior slanted panel wall to create privacy in the outdoor space without obstructing light or views.
