Refurbishment & Extension of Campus for Cumbernauld College
Cumbernauld has had a very ‘bad press’ of late, however amid all the negative stories that have emerged recently, there is one element of the Town Centre that has been going from strength to strength.
Jenkins and Marr Architects have just completed a £7million redevelopment and extension of the existing College buildings that will ensure the continued success of one of the most vibrant Colleges in Scotland. The new extension and alterations will provide the College with better facilities to serve the local community, making the College a key driver in the regeneration of the Town Centre.
The College is a major success within the town. The vast majority of its students come from the town and the College caters for all age groups, backgrounds and disabilities. This success had placed pressure on the existing buildings, as they failed to meet the needs of a modern Further Education College.
Jenkins and Marr worked closely with the College to understand fully how the estate could be developed to maximise its potential and fulfil the needs of students and staff. An integral part of these proposals is the ‘street’. This is a dynamic space which links all three of the Colleges buildings, as well as serving as the main access space for the College. In the ‘street’ is the new main reception and orientation space, something the College badly needed.
