House at Backfields, Cornceres Farm
This new build home project is inspired by it’s rural farm setting and integrating a brand new building into a gentle landscape with few other surrounding buildings. A courtyard design was chosen, similar to the arrangement of traditional farm buildings, to allow different volumes of the home to grow out of the landscape and to provide a sheltered central garden, on a rather windy site. The house's design has been inspired by a profound agricultural essence.
It is thoughtfully laid out around an inviting courtyard, drawing inspiration from the typical arrangement of farm buildings encircling a central yard. The public areas gracefully unfold on a single level, enveloping three sides of the courtyard, while the bedrooms, positioned to the north, are nestled within a one-and-a-half-story structure. The paramount aim was to maintain a modest profile for the building, ensuring its seamless integration with the natural landscape. The client held a firm commitment to proposals that were sensitive toward the surrounding environment, striving to minimise any adverse impact on the landscape. The selection of external materials reverberates with the timeless aesthetics of traditional Scottish farm buildings.
Reclaimed sandstone rubble and quoins were used, using traditional lime mortar. In certain areas, a light render is applied to harmonise with the rubble and mortar. Embracing the familiar profiled roofing, reminiscent of agricultural structures, is a consistent feature throughout the design. The house uses solar panels, an air source heat pump and is fitted with a storage battery for storing surplus electricity.
