Tummel

Tummel is a new build family home nestled within the village limits of Torphins, Aberdeenshire. This rural area recognises a mixture of architectural styles from modern to traditional. However the feel of the area very much harks to its agricultural roots.

This dwelling has been designed in a T-shaped formation and is elevated over 1 & 3/4 storey using a simple palette of external materials that reflect the local vernacular but present a modern twist. As you approach Tummel from the roadside you are welcomed by the eye-catching pitched Siberian larch clad gable with glazed full height detailing.

This, along with the grey corrugated roofing materials, provided a direct link to vernacular barn style buildings and defines the building form allowing it to sit respectively on this site. From within, this space provides comfortable open plan kitchen, dining and living accommodation.

This room is entered by a bespoke barn sliding door in green which is a funky design detail hinting to the agricultural location. Here you are welcomed by a vaulted ceiling with a full height glazed angular panel and 'picture window'. This combination provides a feeling of openness, maximises natural light and solar gain to this South Westerly facing family room whilst giving picturesque views to the valley beyond.

The entrance is tucked on the west aspect and the overhanging 1st floor gives shelter from the elements on approach. The use of Local Granite Stonework with recessed lime pointing forms a main entrance feature to the single storey portion of the house, Granite Stone is a common material used within the area.

The main body of the house is finished with a silicone render system giving the appearance of a traditional white wash finish but with the benefits of modern day render systems. The ground floor and first floor provide private accommodation, workspace and further living space.

Energy efficiency is a key consideration for this family home and has been insulated to surpass current Building Standards and uses an air source heat pump as the primary heating system with the addition of a wood burning stove.
