Cor Cabin

Cor Cabin
2022

The first Corr Cabin was commissioned for Monachyle Mhor hotel, and completed in 2021. Located down a beautiful single-track lane that winds along the wooded banks of Loch Voil, Monachyle Mhor is an independent, family run hotel that has modern design and high quality, locally grown food at its core. With such limited site access, and given the sensitive nature of the site, the cabin had to sit lightly on the ground.

It was designed so that it could fit on a flat bed truck and be lifted off and dropped on to simple rock foundations. Water services and power were run by the Monachyle Mhor team to the cabin site, and the cabin effectively ‘plugged in’ with all services being designed to run to a small cupboard to the rear.

The cabin becomes very much part of the landscape, and the minimal site impact is matched by a goal to mimimise the cabin’s impact on the planet, with natural materials throughout and all materials used in its construction sourced from Scotland - from the stained pine cladding to the CNC cut timber linings.

The internal finishes were also selected with transportation in mind - simple and robust finishes installed in kitchens and bathrooms to avoid the risk of grout popping from tiles while in transit, for example. The cabin was built and installed for £40,000 and was funded as a prototype by S+Co, who agreed a revenue share model with the hotel as a more innovative way of collaborating on the project for mutual benefit.

The first cabin was so successful that S+Co launched Corr Cabins as a standalone business, setting up a workshop in East Lothian, with orders for around 20 cabins on the books and an in-house team of designers, specialist fabricators, joiners and production managers.
