Clydebank Health & Care Centre

Clydebank Health & Care Centre
2022

Clydebank Health and Care Centre is a new primary care facility for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and West Dunbartonshire Council HSCP. The building was delivered by BAM Construction through Hub West Scotland. This health centre is hugely significant for Clydebank, charged with a great deal of social responsibility. The facility is the centrepiece of the Queens Quay masterplan situated on the former John Brown Shipyards.

This masterplan has been decades in the making and the health centre is a key driver for activity in the area. This masterplan shifts the town centre of Clydebank down to the water, reconnecting Clydebank with the Clyde, with Queens Quay and Titan Crane on the doorstep. The health centre signifies a change in the aspirations for Clydebank and the legacy of the shipyards presents challenges. There is deep pride in what was achieved at Clydebank, however post-industrial Clydebank suffers from deprivations and asbestosis is still prevalent in the local population. Placing a primary care health facility at the heart of the new urban centre signifies a transition from this history of ill health to a focus on wellbeing. The health centre recognises the past but looks towards the future.

The art strategy for the facility focuses on these aspirations for the future and interweaves narratives from Clydebank makers and menders with indirect ques from the shipbuilding heritage. The facility offers a centralised model of primary care, with six GP practices, community services, allied healthcare professionals, telecare teams and mental health all operating from the same facility. The building is designed to facilitate interaction between the building users. This encourages collaboration and co-operation between primary care providers. Staff can navigate the building independently of patient zones and are brought together in a spectacular communal central space with 360° views over the basin to Titan Crane, into the landscaped courtyards and up to the Kilpatrick hills. The ground floor of the building has two GP practices, a Podiatry and Physio practice and a community practice.

The first floor has 4 GP practices and the top floor has agile workspaces for staff. The building is arranged around a central atrium space with two open air courtyards. The main entrance courtyard is an extension of the public square and activated by the health education room. This allows the atrium, courtyard, and square to act as overlapping civic spaces to be used for events and health promotion.
