Humewood House
The design approach with regards to the building is to respect the immediate context, and historic fabric of Hume; whilst providing a contemporary living environment. Traditional materials and form is used as the basis for this modern vernacular style house. The modern aspect of the form is focused towards the most discreet area of the site. Large areas of glazing addresses the private garden area; connecting the inside of the house with the beautiful setting.
To reflect the scale and the organic grain of the village, the new building has been conceived as a dual pitch, interlinked single storey house. Careful consideration of the surrounding landscape has determined that the proposed building shall run parallel to the road, in keeping with most of the neighbouring buildings in the village, and the ridge height is kept at the same level as the adjacent Old School House.
The design seeks to respect and compliment the surrounding vernacular in terms of form, scale and materiality. The existing stone wall remains a key element of the new building, forming part of the outer building skin. Quality traditional materials are used within a modern application. This includes powder coated steel roof, timber cladding, and natural stone.
The windows and doors are modern in nature; aluminium composite. The timber cladding, steel and stone form the main body of the house; the traditional base. The contemporary window and door openings complement the traditional body, and express the nature of the modern interior of the house. An air source heat pump was implemented as part of the heating strategy and allowance was made for PV panel installation to the roof.
