Dalmunach Distillery
Archial NORR designed the newly named Dalmunach Distillery located in the village of Carron, Aberlour, on the banks of the famous River Spey.
The area is known as ‘Whisky Country’ with other great distilleries such as Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Glenfarclas, Mortlach, Macallan, Cardhu, and Knockando located within an 8 mile radius of the new Distillery.
The Distillery has the unique configuration of 8 stills (4 pot and 4 spirit) arranged in a circle around the spirit safe and also clearly expresses the Mash House and Tun Room. The new Distillery will provide an increase of ten per cent in the company’s malt whisky distilling capacity, meaning 10 million litres of additional malt spirit each year.
The design included:
– A plan in the form of a barley sheaf recalling the key ingredient
– The 2 outer elements curve out to provide ‘welcoming arms’ to the main entrance
– The Still House is housed in a distinctive glazed structure with adjacent Lochan to provide a memorable and – distinctive feature adjacent to the site entrance i.e. you will instantly know that this is a distillery
– The building addresses the existing buildings opposite to provide continuity with the past
– The former Distillery buildings on the site were recycled to form a distinctive landform to screen both visibility and
– acoustically the yard area
– The simple building forms recall traditional buildings in a contemporary way
