Glamping pods cater for Skye tourism boom
March 13 2018
West Port & Company have come forward with plans to turn a portion of the former Portree Golf Course, currently in use as grazing land, to host 27 ‘camping pods’, supporting infrastructure and an accompanying bar, restaurant and reception building.Plans filed with Highland Council call for the inclusion of a 460sq/m ‘hub’ as well as a 50sq/m sauna with plunge pool, caravan park and 27 single room structures with parking off Struan Road to cater for the booming tourism sector on the Isle of Skye.
Nicknamed The Big Bothy the upmarket destination is the brainchild of Garton Jones Real Estate with the aim of cornering the market amongst both visitors and residents seeking a luxury experience on the outskirts of town.
The planned development would be sited opposite West Highland College.
Garton Jones previously delivered a boutique bunkhouse on Uig within the grounds of a former maternity hospital.

Please, not another development of these effing "glamping" pods - they are ugly as sin and are everywhere in the Highlands right now. I am sure there are much better local architects in the Highlands that could have done something nicer

Although the visuals are pretty decent, the whole bar / restaurant ensemble looks completely alien on the site. The scale is uncomfortable.

In isolation, the wing sections look good and responsive to the landscape, reminding me of Soutra Aisle....but its all gone seriously Pete Tong in the middle.
Posh glamping 'brainchild' (!?) unravels with the addition of a caravan park though.

Clicking through the 'Big Bothy' link to the application offers a chance to see the local council taking issues of privacy and anonymity a little too far.
