A major McAslan & Partners revamp of Glasgow’s Burrell Collection has taken a significant step forward following a decision by the National Lottery to award £15m in funding for the landmark refurbishment.

The cash will contribute toward a £66m package of works, including the redisplay of 9,000 objects to optimize circulation and fully open up all three floors of the 1983 A-listed building.

For the first time the entirety of Sir William Burrell’s collection will be made available online in its entirety with much more of the extensive collection brought out of storage and into public view through the use of rotating displays and temporary exhibitions.
As part of this work collection stores will also be opened to the public for the first time while landscaped terraces will be carved into the surrounding grounds to better integrate the museum with Pollok Country Park.

Sir Angus Grossart, chair of Burrell Renaissance, commented: “The Heritage Lottery Fund’s decision to support the renaissance of the Burrell Collection is a wonderful endorsement of our plans to liberate the great potential of Sir William’s gift. We need to provide a home worthy for this generation, of this incredible collection and its influence.”

Glasgow City Council has already agreed to stump up as much as 50% of the total building costs in order to carry out urgent repairs to the building fabric, meaning that 80% of the projected costs have now been secured.
