Pennywell & Muirhouse civic hub proposal detailed
Barton Willmore have fleshed out plans for a new civic centre serving Edinburgh’s Pennywell and Muirhouse districts to provide a central retail and commercial hub on the site of the current Muirhouse Shopping Centre.

Subject to a £42m regeneration programme delivering over 700 homes over the next eight years the area is already set to benefit from a new NHS partnership centre and a new Craigroyston High School.

Now Barton Willmore have drawn up detailed plans to demolish the ‘tired and unattractive’ centre to create three separate blocks of ground floor retail below flatted accommodation and a community hub with possible office use above.

In a statement to planners Barton Willmore observed: “The proposals for the site represent a sustainable redevelopment of the areas of Pennywell and Muirhouse and are intended to provide an attractive mixed use environment with a key area of public realm which seeks to integrate with existing and proposed patterns of development in the surrounding area.

“The intention is to create a balanced new neighbourhood centre, providing homes for a wide diversity of people and associated retail and community facilities to support the wider residential population.”

A public realm strategy would knit these various components together with the aim of creating a walkable neighbourhood and square that encourages social interaction.
