£28.5m Portobello High School unwrapped
February 7 2017
City of Edinburgh Council has taken possession of a £28.5m Portobello High School over two years after work began on the 1,400 pupil school.Replacing an existing building on Duddington Road, for which a planning application for a new park is now imminent, the school offers the usual range of teaching and learning spaces as well as a 25m pool, games hall, gymnasium and two all-weather sports pitches for community use.
Limited areas of timber detailing were specified including Siberian larch, selected for its warm colours, supplied by Saint Gobain brand International Timber. This was joined by acoustic partitions and high performance glass.
JM Architects commented “The timber elements have been chosen to visually counter point external soffits and features with the lighter rendered surfaces. Internally the bridge and stair were detailed to visually make them prominent elements within the interiors. The materials allow for future wear and tear and patination of the surfaces by the pupils and teachers of the school.”
The school was handed over by Balfour Beatty and A+E Construction in November following delays raised by objections to building in a public park.

The overall design is pretty good, but white render? Seriously? What is this school going to look like in 10 years. Daft and potentially expensive to maintain choice of material.
