James Gillespie’s High School officially unveiled

City of Edinburgh Council has officially unveiled a new teaching block at James Gillespie’s High School, part of a wider £42.8m campus housing nursery, primary and secondary children on one site.The Malala Building is the main teaching wing of the JM Architects designed high school, incorporating 57 classrooms arranged along a central spine linked by external courtyards, dining and social spaces.
Head teacher Donald Macdonald commented: “Pupils and staff are hugely impressed with our new Malala building. It’s a wonderful facility – the design and layout is like no other school. There’s a real feeling of light and space with one side of every classroom glazed to allow in lots of natural light and giving views across Edinburgh.”
Morrison Construction has already commenced the next phase of work, clearing vacated buildings for delivery of new sports and performance buildings by September 2016.
A nursery and rebuilt primary school were completed in an earlier phase of work.
