Crichton Trust appoints Ryder for estate masterplan
June 3 2015
The Crichton Trust, the development body overseeing the Crichton Estate in Dumfries, has appointed Ryder Architecture to develop a master plan for the area that could include a 300-bed spa hotel and visitor centre. This would encourage more tourists to the Crichton Memorial Church by constructing a visitor centre in its crypt together with the redevelopment of Easterbrook Hall to form a spa, bar and restaurant.
A masterplan will explore opportunities for the creation of extensions and new buildings of ‘architectural note’ through to 2020 within the sprawling former psychiatric hospital with stakeholder workshops taking place to that effect.
Rob Shaw, chief executive of the Crichton Trust, said: “This project provides an exciting opportunity to develop a masterplan for the future growth of the Crichton Estate and to re energise the Crichton Regeneration Project with a range of ideas and options for the future.”
Discussions have reportedly begun with an unnamed US developer to bring forward these plans.
