Dunoon Burgh Hall transformation set for New Year start
December 16 2014
Work to transform Dunoon Burgh Hall into a new cultural hub is to proceed in January after the project won £300k in funding from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the final tranche of a £1.65m funding package. The cash will fund an overhaul of the existing building fabric allowing it to be repurposed as a multi-use community arts facility offering space for a range of exhibitions, dance classes, concerts, art classes, events and gatherings
John McAslan, head of the John McAslan Family Trust which is overseeing the work, told Urban Realm: “There must be hundreds of buildings like this across Scotland which are languishing empty and unused which are desperately in need of being brought back into use. I hope the Burgh Halls is a test case to show one way of doing it from scratch with no money. If Dunoon can do it from nothing then Cumnock, Arisaig or Wick can too.”
Page\Park architects have been appointed to oversee the work after being selected from a shortlist of six practices.
A more detailed look at Dunoon will be included in the Christmas edition of Urban Realm magazine.
