Planning in principle sought for Madras College
September 13 2013
An application for planning in principle has been filed for Madras College by Aedas Architects on behalf of Fife Council as part of efforts to gauge local opinion ahead of a full. The new secondary school is proposed to be built on greenfield land at Pipeland, St Andrews, and will merge three separate sites currently scattered around town into one unified campus.
To retain a sense of history and identity the new school will reference key features of its historic 1833 home; including a ‘quad’ meeting space, a rooftop ‘lawn’ above the sports hall and a new sheltered ‘courtyard’.
Occupying a steeply sloping site a terraced approach is being investigated to engage visual interest with a public arts strategy employed to incorporate works directly into the fabric of the building.
Budgeted at up to £40m the school will cater for 1,450 pupils and is set to be up and ready by August 2016.

My old haunt, glad it's finally getting a single site. Terrible state of affairs at the moment: this will allow the school to finally fulfil it's potential.

When I saw the brutalist images I was at once reminded of the neo-Jacobean honey stone coloured building on South Street and not some talentless 1960's local authority architect.

Sven, I don't know the ins and outs of the project but I think Planning in Principle implies no building detail will yet have been decided. I would think the fact there is no glazing shown this might be massing only??
I would prefer to reserve judgement until I see the full detail. (hopefully a bit less grey by then...)
