Housing deal struck for Edinburgh’s Muirhouse
June 11 2013
A contract to build 202 affordable homes in the Muirhouse district of North Edinburgh has been signed by Springfield Properties and Muirhouse Housing Association.Designed by Marc Meharry and Derek Pirouet of Yeoman McAllister architects phase one is valued at £6.9m and will see delivery of an initial 58 properties across a mix of houses and flats.
Highly energy efficient the homes will be inexpensive to run and will be built using a volume procurement model. Commenting on this Springfield director Tom Leggeat said: “The model passes on to the Registered Social Landlord, the value of economies of scale and time generated by repetition of design, construction techniques, construction programming and Springfield’s supply chain economies. Savings are made on the procurement of materials and sub-contracts and on the duration of the build.”
Muirhouse director, Brenda Toner, added: “We were delighted to be approached by Springfield regarding a development opportunity within our community. We liked their attitude which is very much ‘tell us what you need and we will provide it’.”
This follows advertisement of an £80m scheme to deliver 800 mixed tenure homes across Pennywell and Muirhouse by Edinburgh City Council.
The full development will be completed by 2016.
