Walters & Cohen win £5m primary school in Kirkintilloch
Walters & Cohen architects have been shortlisted to design a £5m primary school in Kirkintilloch, after being selected by East Dumbartonshire Council, following the formal go ahead from the Scottish Government.

Lairdsland Primary will be situated on the banks of the Forth & Clyde canal at Southbank Marina and provide teaching space for up to 300 pupils.

The design has currently been prepared to RIBA Stage C and will now be further developed ahead of a formal planning application being submitted.

Amongst other facilities it will accommodate activity spaces, reading corners, wet areas, an outdoor classroom and astro turf pitch which could be ready by 2014.

The existing Lairdsland primary on Kerr Street, which opened in 1875, will be closed.
East Dunbartonshire Council have given assurances that every precaution will be taken to mitigate any danger posed by the canal

Great to see this “Local“ practice winning the project

By my calculations their office is approximately 404 miles from the site

SFT “Hub” Procurement at its best

Its all about engaging with Local Companies you know !

I'm excited to learn of this appointment. W+C schools down south are exemplary. I would rather see innovative, exciting spaces created regardless of where the architects are based.
Travel expenses denting recent SFT announcements on savings to public purse probably worth it!

#4 Indeed. Unf. as we can all see by some pretty poor examples of PS in this country, any eijit can design a PS.
I'm glad SFT invited new faces to keep the usual suspects on their toes - would like to have seen the Reiach + Hall proposals.
